Feeling ill partway through the day is another reason. Most of our excuses to call in sick are written for a whole day off. UK Statutory Sick Pay also counts only whole days, so a fever that starts at 2 pm comes under your employer’s policy. When one afternoon isn’t enough, our excuses to get out of work hold up from 9 to 5.
Coffee badging
Coffee badging is an office visit that lasts one coffee, long enough to swipe in and be seen. The best argument for it is the traffic. You leave before rush hour, so the drive home is short. Seen and Gone is coffee badging as a game: stay in your manager’s sight until the day counts, then slip out.

How to ask to leave early
How to leave work early without getting in trouble
Tell your manager a time in the morning, then leave at that time.
- Block the time that morning, before someone books a 4 pm meeting over it. 63% of UK workers already “clock block” their calendars.
- Hand over the one thing someone will look for after you’ve gone.
- Leave at the time you gave. If you said 3:30 and leave at 2:50, someone will ask why.
- Answer the first message after you’ve gone. One reply at 4:40 is enough for the whole afternoon.
A half day of PTO needs no excuse. Our countdown to 5pm can count to your own exit time instead. Under Your hours, set Day ends to 3:30.
When someone says leaving already
You gave your manager the time that morning, so there’s nothing new to explain. If they’re the one asking, remind them of it. When anyone else calls out “leaving already” as you go, the whole reply is “yes”.
Questions about leaving work early
How do I tell my boss I need to leave early?
Tell them in the morning, with a time and a handover: 'I need to leave at 3:30 today for an appointment. The report is done and I'll check messages at 5.' Your manager will want to know when you're leaving and where your work stands, and that message answers both before they ask.
What's the best excuse to leave work early?
An appointment someone else scheduled, like an eye exam or a parent-teacher conference. You can't move the time, so there's nothing to discuss.
Is it better to call in sick or leave early?
Leave early if you can get through the morning. By then you've been seen, your work has started, and a few hours of leave cost less than a whole day. Call in sick when you can't face the commute at all.
What to say when leaving work early?
Say the time and where things stand, in one message: 'Heading off now. The numbers are in the shared sheet and I'm on my phone until 6.' Skip the reason if you gave it that morning.
How do you get sent home from work?
Tell your manager you feel too ill to finish the day, and ask to go home. In the UK, the rest of that day comes under your employer's sick policy, because Statutory Sick Pay only counts whole days off.
Can I leave work early if I have nothing to do?
Only if your manager agrees, or you have flex time. 57% of wage and salary workers in the US can shift their start and finish times. Without it, ask in the morning and offer to answer messages until your usual finish.
