All 200 excuses to get out of work, by how risky they are

Low risk

  1. The internet company's window is 8 to 5, and until they come I have no internet.

It rules out working from home before anyone can suggest it.

  2. My name came up on the apartment waiting list, and I have to sign today or lose it.

Anyone who has rented in a big city will tell you to go.

  3. The boiler died overnight, and the engineer can come any time between 8 and 6.

A window that wide is a whole day, and everyone knows it.

  4. There's a gas smell in the kitchen, and the gas company told me to wait outside until they've checked.

Nobody argues with the gas company, and nobody wants the smell brought into the office.

  5. The power is out on my street, and the utility says it'll be back by 4.

Utilities publish outage maps, so check yours shows your street first.

  6. My front door lock broke from the inside, and I can't get out until the locksmith arrives.

Locked in beats locked out. There's no spare key at anyone's wedding to blame.

  20. There's a bear on my porch, and wildlife control says to stay inside until it leaves.

True ones happen, but in a city it reads as a test of your manager's patience.

  21. There's a fox in my kitchen, and it won't leave.

Somebody will ask what you did to the fox.

  22. My phone fell in the lake, and it holds every two-factor code I log in with.

They'll ask IT to send you a new code in ten minutes.

  23. The vendor call clashes with the 2 o'clock, and it's the only slot they had this month.

They'll ask which vendor, and then they'll ask the vendor.

  24. I have a hard stop at 2:55.

Nobody believes a hard stop at 2:55, so give a reason with it.

  25. I'm in focus time.

Your manager will ask what you're focusing on.

  26. I'm on another call.

They'll ask with whom, and your calendar shows nothing.

  27. That meeting could have been an email, and I'll read the email.

True, and said once in a career.

  28. My monitor died, and I can't work on the laptop screen alone.

They'll say plenty of people do. Plenty of people do.

  29. My cat got into my work clothes drawer, and nothing clean is left.

They'll suggest jeans. You will have to explain about the jeans.

  30. I dropped a jar of honey on the kitchen floor and I'm still stuck to it.

It sounds like a children's book. They'll laugh, then expect you at noon.

  31. My phone updated overnight and turned off my alarm, so I slept through the morning.

True and common, and it still sounds like an excuse. Be in by 11.

  32. I've been picked for a focus group, and it pays.

They'll ask what it's about. Say snacks.

  33. I'm the emergency contact for my building, and the elevator is stuck with people in it.

Heroic, but they'll ask why the building picked you.

  34. I'm not coming in because it's my birthday.

It's honest. Somebody will also remember it next year.

  35. I have a hangover.

Almost nobody admits this one, and it guarantees a follow-up chat.

  36. My horoscope said to stay home.

Nobody has ever accepted this one, though some have laughed.

  37. I've been asked to judge a dog show.

    They'll ask which breed won.

  38. I'm saving my energy for the holidays.

Honest, and it will come up at your review.

  39. I can't go to the conference, because my passport is at the embassy for a visa.

They'll ask why you need a visa for a conference in Ohio.

  40. I can't make the reorg town hall, because I'm updating my resume.

Never say this one. Think it during the town hall.

  41. I'm calling out because I'm moving tomorrow and nothing is packed.

They'll ask why you didn't book the day off. Nobody plans the packing.

  42. I'm calling out because I've got an interview for a better job today.

Never send this one. Use a dentist.

  43. My roommate locked the door with my keys inside and left for the airport.

They'll ask why you don't have a spare. Everyone asks about the spare.

How to call out of work

What to say when you call out

Calling out means telling work you won’t be in today. Every one of our texts to call out of work follows the same four steps:

  1. Use the channel your workplace asks for, a text or a call, and send it before your shift starts.
  2. Give one reason. Keep it short, and make it something nobody can check.
  3. Say when you’ll be back, or when you’ll send an update.
  4. Hand over your work: who’s covering your shift, or what’s done and where to find it.

Which excuses hold up

Bulletproof excuses to get out of work

The most bulletproof excuses to get out of work depend on someone else’s schedule. A court date is one. So is an internet installer who will only promise “sometime today”. The best ones also stop you working from home, which is why “my internet is down” scores so well.

A phone dropped in a lake is a high-risk excuse. If it’s the phone your sign-in codes go to, IT will just set you up with a new one.

Good excuses to miss work on short notice

Good excuses to miss work on short notice are things nobody could see coming, like a burst pipe at 7 am. If it was booked ahead, your manager will ask why you didn’t say sooner. If you only need the afternoon, excuses to leave work early need less of a story.

If you’re ill, our excuses to call in sick help you word the message. If you’re not, our guide on how to fake being sick rates the performance.

Getting out of the boss’s present

When the collection email goes around for the boss’s birthday or farewell gift, these hold up:

  • “It’s not in my budget this month.” Gifts at work are supposed to go from the boss to the team, so nobody argues.
  • “I’ll sign the card instead.” You still look involved, and it costs nothing.
  • No reply at all. A collection email nobody answers is rarely mentioned again.

Getting out of team-building

Team-building runs in work hours, so “I’m busy” won’t hold. These do:

  • A client call that only fits that slot. Your manager wants the deal more than your team spirit.
  • A medical appointment booked months ago. Nobody asks you to give up a specialist’s slot.
  • School pickup, for an event that runs past five. Pickup times are fixed, and nobody argues with them.
  • “My back won’t take a trust fall.” A trust fall means falling backwards into your coworkers’ arms, which is exactly what a bad back rules out. It works even at a session you can’t skip, because no organizer wants the blame if it goes wrong.

Questions about getting out of work

What is the most believable excuse?

A dull problem at home, like waiting for a plumber or a landlord's inspection. It's too boring to question, and nobody wants to hear the details.

What is a believable excuse to miss work?

One that also stops you working from home, like a court date or an internet installer who will only promise 'sometime today'. 'My internet is down' holds up for the same reason, because logging on for an hour is the first thing a manager will suggest.

How to get off work last minute?

Message your manager before your day starts, give one reason and say when you'll be back. On short notice, details are what people check, so give fewer of them.

How to call off without saying why?

Ask for a personal day and stop there: 'I need to take today off for a personal matter' is a complete message. Whether it's paid depends on your leave balance and your employer's policy.

What is a good reason to call out of work?

Something you couldn't plan for, like a pipe that bursts before breakfast or a child who wakes up sick. A reason that was booked weeks ago gets you a second question, which is why you didn't say sooner.
