Pension age rules in the US, UK and Australia

The US: 62

Social Security can start paying at 62. Even so, 39% of workers expect to work until 70 or later, or never retire.

If you were born on the 1st of a month, Social Security counts you as born in the month before. A January 1 birthday counts as December of the year before. The clock’s count to full retirement age follows the same rule. For a birthday on the 1st, it ends on the last day of the month before your birthday month.

The UK: 66, then 67, then 68

State Pension age is 66 and rising. Your birth date sets yours.

Counting down to retirement

Working days until retirement

The working days until retirement are every Monday to Friday before your date, about 260 a year. Holidays and time off are in that count too, so the real number is lower.

Ten years out, there are about 520 Mondays left. Each one opens with a standup.

When to hand in your notice

Close to your date, hold your notice if layoffs are coming. A layoff usually brings a package, and a resignation brings a card. Our farewell message examples have retirement lines for that card.

A buyout a few months before your pension starts can pay for the gap. If your stock hasn’t vested, wait for it. Until then, you’re wearing golden handcuffs.
