Work day countdown

Work day countdown clocks for 5pm, Friday and retirement, plus today's quarter and week number. Each one runs in your own time zone.

Which clock for which deadline

Today

For when the afternoon drags. The 5 pm clock takes your own end time and skips the weekend. Clocks for 3, 4 and 6 pm stick to their hour. How long until Friday counts to your Friday finish, and is it Friday yet gives the one-word answer.

Calendar

For deadlines and payroll. What quarter is it knows the calendar year and the US, UK and Australian governments’ fiscal years. The week number today comes as ISO and US counts, which don’t always match.

Career

For the longest countdown at work. It takes your birth date and a pension age, from the US, UK or Australia or one you pick, and counts down the days, the weekdays and the Mondays to go.

Your workday, counted

A work day countdown on your own clock

Every work day countdown here counts in your local time. When the clocks change on a weekend, the count from Friday to Monday gains or loses an hour.

Clock changes in 2026Date or hours
Sydney goes forwardOctober 4
London goes backOctober 25
New York goes backNovember 1
6 pm Friday to 5 pm Monday, the weekend the clocks go back72 hours
The same stretch, the weekend they go forward70 hours

2026 in workdays

2026 has 261 weekdays. A 9 to 5 on every one of them comes to 2,088 hours. That’s eight hours a day, with no holidays and no days off. The commute is not included.

In 2026 the week numbers run to 53, because January 1 was a Thursday.

What the clocks can’t count

A salaried job often has no official end time. The countdown to 5pm counts to the end time you set. Whoever says “leaving already” is counting to a later one. The clocks for 3 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm can only count to their own hour, for a 7 to 3, an 8 to 4 or a 9 to 6.

The retirement countdown is the longest count. It ends on your retirement date, and a layoff or a buyout offer won’t show up in it.

Questions about counting work days

How many working days are in a year?

Between 260 and 262 weekdays, and 2026 has 261. Take out public holidays and 2026 leaves 250 after the 11 US federal holidays, or 253 after the 8 bank holidays in England and Wales.

How many working days are left this year?

The weekdays between today and December 31, less any public holidays still to come. In Excel, =NETWORKDAYS(TODAY(),DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),12,31)) counts them, and a list of holiday dates added as a third value takes those out too.

What is 30 calendar days in working days?

20 to 22 working days, before holidays. 30 days is four full weeks, which hold 20 weekdays, plus two more days that add none, one or two, depending on whether they fall on a weekend.

Does the countdown change when the clocks change?

Yes, by an hour, because every clock here counts in your own local time. In 2026, 6 pm Friday to 5 pm Monday runs 72 hours over the weekend the clocks go back, and 70 over the one they go forward.
