Office fun ideas inside the working day

Most of these office fun ideas fit inside a working day, so nobody has to stay late. Team building is the work social activity British employees like least, and regular get-togethers after work come second.

Our icebreaker questions for work take a minute at a stand-up, or up to 15 minutes at an offsite.

Awards with a reason

Each of the funny office awards comes with a short reason that tells everyone what the winner did to earn it. Between 2022 and 2024, people who got high-quality recognition at work were 45% less likely to leave their jobs.

Pranks with an undo

You can undo any of the office pranks in a minute, so anyone they annoy isn’t annoyed for long. Almost as many Americans find April Fools’ pranks annoying as find them amusing.

A title and a background

A grander title is the cheapest perk an office has. 39% of US workers say they’ve been given a more senior title with no pay increase. The funny job titles at least say what the job is.

Our funny Zoom backgrounds put an office joke behind you on a call, like your manager running for the elevator you’re in. They’re free, and they work in Teams too.

Questions about office fun

How do you have fun at work?

Keep it inside working hours and make every part optional. British employees rank team building as the work social activity they like least, at 31%, and after-hours socials come next, at 20%. A one-minute icebreaker or a round of awards asks far less of anyone.

How do you run a fun Friday at the office?

Book the last hour of Friday's working day and fill it with short things: an icebreaker, a round of awards and a prank everyone can undo by Monday. Only 16% of meetings fall on a Friday, against 23% on a Tuesday, so that hour is easier to clear.

What are some fun things to have in an office?

A wall of printed award certificates, a rubber duck on a developer's monitor and a pack of googly eyes kept for April 1. A funny background for video calls is the one that costs nothing.

Do people like April Fools' pranks?

About as many dislike them as enjoy them: 44% of Americans call the pranks amusing, and 41% call them annoying. At work, that split is the case for pranks a coworker can undo in a minute.
