What upskilling means
Upskilling meaning in plain words
Upskilling means learning new skills to use in your current job. It also means a company teaching those skills to its workers. One dictionary adds that companies do it especially as an alternative to layoffs. They train the people they have instead of replacing them.
Upskilling, reskilling and skilling up
Upskilling keeps you in your job, while reskilling trains you for a new one.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Upskilling | New skills, same job, such as an accountant learning the new reporting tool |
| Reskilling | Training for a different job, such as a call center agent becoming a data analyst |
| Skilling up | Informal for upskilling: “I need to skill up on Python” |
Where you’ll meet it
Upskilling is one of the corporate buzzwords you’ll meet in strategy decks and annual reviews. A global report on the future of jobs paired it with reskilling in January 2018.
Upskilling and AI
The skills gap in two numbers
Employers want AI skills, but in 2024 only 39% of people using AI at work had any training on it from their employer.
| In 2024 | Share |
|---|---|
| Leaders who wouldn’t hire someone without AI skills | Two thirds |
| AI users bringing their own AI tools to work | 78% |
The upskilling email
Subject: Your AI
upskillingtraining path is readyHi team, as part of this year’s transformation program you’ve each been enrolled in six short courses on the new AI assistant. Please complete them by October 31. Each takes about 40 minutes and can be fit in whenever suits you.
Whenever suits you
In an upskilling email, “whenever suits you” means nobody has set time aside. The six courses above add up to about four hours, and with no slot in the calendar, they land in lunch breaks and evenings. Ask for a calendar block called “training”. Without one, the courses are homework.
Making upskilling count
Use it within a week
Use a new skill on real work within a week, or it fades. The second time you use it is when the skill sticks.
Get it on the record
Write down what you learned and what it changed, such as hours saved, and bring it to your next review. If you post the certificate, our LinkedIn speak translator turns “thrilled to share” back into plain English.
If you run the team
Upskilling a team is mostly scheduling.
- Put the training in the calendar as work time.
- The person who learned it first is the team’s next subject matter expert. Pair them with someone who hasn’t learned it yet.
- Count what changed in the work, such as hours saved, instead of courses finished. A dashboard of completions measures clicking.
When upskilling is a signal
Compared with most words in our corporate jargon dictionary, upskilling is good news more often than not. When the training comes with work hours and a budget, the company usually plans to need you.
If your team is told to “explore AI” with no budget and no hours, keep your resume current. Read up on job hugging before you decide to stay.

Learning new skills for your current job, or a company training its staff in them. The job stays the same, but what it takes to do it well has changed.
What is a synonym for upskilling?
Skilling up is the informal version, and training and professional development mean much the same. Reskilling is close, but it means training for a new role. L&D, short for learning and development, is the team that runs the training.
How can I upskill myself?
Pick one skill your current job is moving toward and learn it from a short course or a colleague. Then use it on real work within a week. If it's a course, ask to take it in work hours and have the training budget pay.
What is an example of upskilling?
A payroll clerk learning the new HR system is upskilling. So is an analyst picking up SQL, or a marketing team learning to use an AI assistant for first drafts. Each keeps the same job and adds a skill to it.
