What a tiger team is
Tiger team meaning at work
A tiger team is a handful of people picked for what they know and taken off their normal work. They get one urgent problem and a deadline. When the problem is fixed, the team breaks up.
Tiger team is one of the few terms in our jargon dictionary that comes with an end date. Most tiger teams are cross-functional on purpose, so each department sends its subject matter expert.
The security sense
In security, a tiger team is paid to break in. It gets past an organization’s defenses, physical or digital, and then reports how it got in. Security people also say red team, for an authorized group that plays the attacker.
In one physical test, a tester carrying a ladder walks in behind someone who holds the door. Nobody asks a person with a ladder where they’re going.
Tiger team, task force, war room
A tiger team is a task force kept for the hardest problems. The war room is where it works.
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| Tiger team | A group set up for an especially hard or critical problem, which can work outside the usual chain of command |
| Task force | Any group set up for one particular job, often to solve a problem |
| War room | A meeting room with the blinds down and a whiteboard nobody is allowed to wipe |
Where the tiger comes from
The Apollo 13 story
Nobody knows where the tiger comes from. A popular story says Apollo 13’s flight controllers were the Tiger Team in 1970. NASA’s own day-by-day history of that rescue names its control teams White, Black, Gold and Maroon. It never calls any of them a tiger team.
NASA still uses it
NASA still uses the phrase. Before Europa Clipper launched for Jupiter’s moon Europa in October 2024, a tiger team checked whether key electronics could take the radiation.

Who gets picked
A tiger team usually gets called when something mission critical breaks. The team gets whoever knows that system best, whatever their title.
The same five people end up on every tiger team, because they fixed the last crisis. Their day jobs don’t pause, so the tiger team meets at 7 pm.
When it stops being a tiger team
A tiger team that gets operationalized, with a weekly slot and a slide template, has turned into a committee. Once it gets a logo, it has outlived its problem.
Tiger teams are meant to be ad hoc. Each one gets a single problem, and when it’s fixed, everyone goes home. Handing one every problem at once is asking it to boil the ocean.
Running one that works
A tiger team that works has these five things.
- Five people or fewer, each with a skill nobody else in the group has.
- One problem, in a sentence everyone agrees on.
- One person who decides when the team disagrees.
- Day jobs covered by someone else, in writing.
- An end date, and a one-page write-up of what broke.

Questions about tiger teams
Why is it called a tiger team?
Nobody knows for sure. No dictionary entry gives an origin, so every story about the tiger is a guess, including the popular one about Apollo 13.
What's another phrase for tiger team?
Task force, strike team or SWAT team. In plain words, it's a small group set up to fix one problem fast.
What is the difference between a red team and a tiger team?
In security, little: a red team is an authorized group that plays the attacker to test an organization's defenses, and tiger team can mean that same job. In business, a tiger team fixes a problem and attacks nothing.
What does a tiger team do?
It works on one problem until it's solved. The members find the cause and fix it, then write up how to keep it from coming back. After that the team breaks up, and everyone goes back to their day job.
Is a tiger team the same as a task force?
Not exactly: a task force is any group brought together to do a particular job. A tiger team takes on an especially difficult or critical problem, often outside the normal chain of command.
What does tiger team mean in the military?
In US military jargon, a tiger team can be a team paid to test security by trying to get in. Its testers leave fake bomb signs or notes where a real intruder could have struck. The same name also covers any special team called in to look at one problem.
