How PTO works
One bank for every day off
PTO means paid time off. Under a PTO plan, every paid day away from work comes out of one balance, instead of one for vacation and another for sick days. In March 2026, 52% of US private-sector workers without a union had a plan like this. Among union members it was 29%.
PTO in a sentence
PTO is a noun in “three days of PTO left” and a place in “I’m on PTO”. In “I’m PTO Friday” it has turned into a status. A manager’s “take some PTO” is the cheapest thank-you in the building, since you’re spending your own days.
A bank that fills as you work
In many plans your PTO balance grows by a few hours every pay period. A few months into a new job, you have only a day or two saved.
How many PTO days people get
On average, employers with one PTO bank give two days fewer than employers who keep vacation and sick days apart.
| US private industry, full-time | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average days in one PTO bank after a year | 20 |
| Average vacation days with separate pots | 12 |
| Average sick days with separate pots | 10 |
| Workers with paid vacation (one in five had none) | 80% |
| With paid vacation, at places of 500 or more staff | 91% |
| With paid vacation, at places of fewer than 50 staff | 71% |
How the days grow
Paid vacation goes up the longer you stay with one employer, so changing jobs can put you back at the bottom.
| US private-industry workers who got | Share |
|---|---|
| 10 to 14 days of paid vacation after one year | 32% |
| 15 to 19 days after ten years | 30% |
Using the PTO you have
Days that stay in the bank
Lots of US workers have PTO days and leave them unused.
| US workers who | Share |
|---|---|
| Went a full year without taking a vacation | 36% |
| Would rather have no paid time off at all | 4% |
| Feel anxious requesting PTO for a vacation (full-time) | 35% |
| Schedule their PTO around national holidays | Half |
The PTO request
A PTO approval often comes with “just keep an eye on email”. That means you’re still working, only from somewhere nicer. Set an out-of-office reply anyway. If you’d like it to get a smile, borrow a line from our funny out-of-office messages.
When sick days and vacation share one balance, you don’t owe anyone a story about the flu. Some workplaces still want a reason, and that’s what our excuses to call in sick are for.
PTO, flex time and unlimited plans
PTO pays you for hours you don’t work. Flex time keeps your hours the same and lets you choose when you work them. Unlimited PTO drops the balance altogether, and the people who have it average only two more days off a year.
Any of the three can turn up in an offer letter as a perk. Look each one up in our corporate jargon dictionary, then read that part of the offer twice.

Please turn over
On paper, mostly in Britain, PTO means please turn over. There’s more on the back, and it’s usually the part everyone misses.
Tractors, schools and patents
PTO is also a tractor’s power take-off and the US Patent and Trademark Office. At an American school, the PTO is the parent-teacher organization, which runs the bake sale.

Questions about PTO
What does PTO stand for at work?
Paid time off, meaning time away from work that your employer still pays for. Some companies call it personal time off, and it means the same thing.
Is PTO the same as vacation?
Not quite, since vacation is one kind of paid leave. With PTO, it shares one balance with your sick days and personal days. A day off with the flu and a day at the beach come out of the same bank.
What is the meaning of PTO on paper?
Please turn over. British forms and letters print it at the bottom of a page when the text continues on the other side.
What is PTO slang for?
At work it's a status as much as a noun. "I'm PTO Friday" means I'm off on Friday and won't be checking in. Outside work, PTO can also mean a parent-teacher organization or a tractor's power take-off.
Is PTO the same as annual leave?
Close. Annual leave is the British and Australian name for paid days off for a vacation, and the UK government calls the yearly allowance holiday entitlement. A PTO bank also covers sick and personal days, so annual leave matches the vacation part of PTO.
