What hybrid work means
Hybrid work meaning in a job ad
Hybrid work divides your week between the office and home. In the UK it’s often called hybrid working, the form a major British dictionary lists first, with hybrid work second.
In a job ad, hybrid tells you the job isn’t WFO every day, and it isn’t fully remote either. It can mean one office day a month or four a week, so get the number in writing.
How a hybrid week is arranged
Most hybrid policies set the days in one of two ways. Either your team comes in on fixed anchor days or on a rotation, or you owe a weekly minimum and pick the days yourself.
If the rule only checks badge swipes, a short visit can count as a full day. Doing that on purpose is called coffee badging.
Hybrid, remote and WFH
The difference between hybrid and remote work is the office days.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Hybrid | A set number of office days each week, and home the rest |
| Remote | No office days, or rare visits |
| WFO | In the office every working day |
| WFH | Working from home today |

Hybrid work in practice
A video call with a commute attached
Half your colleagues come in on other days. On your office day, you end up on video calls with them anyway.
On a Tuesday in December 2025, offices in 10 cities set a post-pandemic attendance record. That day they were 66.0% as full as before the pandemic. Tuesday is when hot desking turns into a contact sport.
Office days that keep rising
Hybrid rules keep adding office days, which moves them closer to a full return to office. Attendance rises more slowly than the rules do.
| Office days | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average days a week employers in the Americas expected, 2024 | 3.1 |
| Average days a week staff came in, 2024 | 2.8 |
| Office days US policies asked for, mid-2024 to mid-2025 | 10% more |
| How much busier US offices got over the same year | 2 to 3% |
Questions to ask about a hybrid offer
Ask these before you take a hybrid job:
- “How many days a week in the office, and is that number in the contract?”
- “Are the days fixed for the team, or my choice?”
- “Does the company help pay for the commute or parking on office days?”
- “What happened the last time the policy changed?”
