What FYA means

For your action

In corporate email, FYA means for your action. Someone wants something done, and you’re the one who does it. You’ll see it most often on forwarded threads.

FYA and FYI

FYI means for your information. It’s something you should know, with nothing for you to do. FYA is the version with homework.

One letter separates the two, and that letter can cost you an afternoon. FYI has been in print since at least 1948, when a magazine printed a cable with one in the postscript.

For your attention, and for your amusement

FYA can also mean for your attention, which is close to the action sense. One British learner’s dictionary lists a third sense, for your amusement, used when you email someone a joke.

FYA in a text

fya as fire

In texts and on social media, fya is usually slang for fire, meaning excellent. It comes from how fire is pronounced in varieties of Black English.

The spelling fiyah is more common online. Fyah is also a common form of fire in Jamaican English.

An old email label

The British R&B group Faya started out as FYA. Those letters came from For Your Attention, an early email acronym. Their 2004 track Too Hot punned on fire, which tied the email sense to the slang one.

FYA at the office

When FYA arrives with no ask

When an FYA doesn’t name a task, reply with a single question asking what you need to do and by when. If the thread runs to 40 messages, don’t read them all hunting for the task.

FYA, FW and CC on one email

An FW with FYA on top means the sender is handing the whole thread over to you. If you’re on the CC line and the body says FYA, the email contradicts itself. The Cc line is for people who only need to know.

Add an NRN to the same email, and you’ve been asked to act and told no reply is needed.

Write the action instead

The clearest FYA is one plain sentence saying who does what by when, such as “Can you approve the Denver trip by Friday noon”. Putting that sentence first is the idea behind BLUF, bottom line up front.

Of the email labels in the plain-English jargon dictionary, FYA is the one that hands you work. The label on its own can’t say what that work is, so the reader still needs the plain sentence.

FYA to a whole team

An FYA sent to eight people needs a name in it, or each of them assumes somebody else will act. Put the owner in the first line, as in “Ana, this one’s yours”, and the other seven can treat it as an FYI.

Answering an FYA

Answer an FYA by doing the thing, then replying with one line saying it’s done and where the result is. If you can’t make the deadline, say so the day the FYA arrives.

A forwarded email marked FYA

Subject: FW: Q4 travel budget, FYA your job now

Sam, finance wants every trip over $500 approved again by Friday noon. Yours is the Denver conference. Two lines on why it still matters and it’s done.

FYA in a sentence

  1. FYA: the supplier contract needs your signature by noon, Gwen.

  2. Subject line: FYA, revised budget. Please approve or comment by Thursday.

  3. FYA, Rob: someone has labeled the printer Do Not Feed After Midnight.

  4. Kiri sent it as FYI, Pavel, but it should have said FYA, since the client deadline was today.

Questions about FYA

What does FYA mean in a text message?

When the message is about work, it means for your action, so you need to do something. In casual texts, fya is more often slang for fire, which means very good, as in "that outfit is fya".

How do you pronounce FYA?

As slang, fya is said like fire, roughly FIE-yuh. The work label FYA is only written, so out loud you say the words it stands for, for your action.

What is FYA and FYI?

FYI is for your information, with nothing to do. FYA is for your action, so a task comes attached. If an email says FYA and you can't find the task, ask what's wanted and by when.

What does FYA stand for?

Mostly for your action. Sometimes it means "for your attention" instead. One dictionary adds "for your amusement", the tag on a joke you email to someone.
