Corporate buzzwords, ranked

Synergy is the corporate buzzword people Google most, 46,450 times a month in the US, UK and Australia. Circle back is the most hated. In the meeting below, the VP talks in buzzwords, and the people at the table frown or pull out their phones.

Before we pivot, does everyone have the bandwidth?

The plan changed. So did your weekend.

No.

Corporate buzzwords in a sentence

Every line the VP says in the meeting, with what it means. Left to right, the five at the table are the five hate rankings, and each pulls a face at a word on theirs: over 5,000 Reddit comments sorted by software, posts on X, a poll of 1,004 Australian office workers, a panel of 3,000 adults and 3,000 posts and comments that mention jargon. A phone comes out for every 10,000 monthly lookups of a line's buzzwords.

What the buzzword rankings show

Searched and hated

Synergy, touch base and bandwidth are the corporate buzzwords people both look up and hate. Each is on three of the five hate rankings and gets more than 11,000 lookups a month.

Our plain-English jargon dictionary translates them as teamwork, check in and time. Synergy and bandwidth are also two of the nouns our corporate bullshit generator builds its sentences from.

Hated, rarely looked up

Circle back is first on three hate rankings, but few people look it up. Searches for the circle back meaning come to 1,931 a month, one for every 24 searches for synergy.

When someone says circle back in your next meeting, mark it off in our buzzword bingo for meetings.

Per my last email made one hate list. People look up the per my last email meaning only 232 times a month, the fewest of any buzzword in the search ranking.

Looked up, on no hate list

Wheelhouse, table stakes and headwinds each get thousands of lookups a month, but none of the five hate rankings names them. If you’d rather guess than look them up, all three turn up in our corporate jargon quiz.

Most of the 3,567 searches a month for the table stakes meaning come from the US. The phrase means the bare minimum, and it started in poker.

Fading

Run it up the flagpole and take this offline are the buzzwords people search for less and less.

The buzzwords in job ads

A job ad has buzzwords of its own, and each one hides a plain meaning.

The ad saysIt means
Fast-pacedNobody planned, so everything is due today.
Competitive salaryA number too small to print.
Hit the ground runningThere is no training.

Team player, loyalty and collaboration

Team player, loyalty and collaboration are buzzwords that come with a request attached.

You’ll hear team player and loyalty the week holiday pay gets cut. The request is that you take it without complaining. Collaboration is the reason given when you’re asked into the office more days a week.

How the searches and hate lists were counted

Searches

The figures are monthly Google searches for each term’s meaning, such as “synergy meaning”, averaged over September 2025 to August 2026 for the US, the UK and Australia. They are DataForSEO’s estimates, which use clickstream data to split Google Ads volumes between close variants of a phrase.

Ad hoc, cadence and moat also mean other things outside the office. For those three, we counted searches with “in business” on the end, such as “moat meaning in business”.

Hate rankings

The hate count is how many of the five rankings, published from 2024 to 2026, name a term. It doesn’t measure how strongly anyone dislikes it.

What are the newest corporate buzzwords?

Workslop, spamplication and microshifting made a list of 2025's most popular workplace buzzwords.
